Valentina Vela is a Colombian/Peruvian performer based in London, UK. Currently, she working towards her MA in Performance Practice as Research at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, where she is developing a practice of bilingual storytelling as performance of immigrant double consciousness.
Valentina has studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Experimental Theatre Wing in New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in New York City, USA, and participated in Theater Mitu's South India Artist Intensive summer program in Bangalore, India. Her acting training includes Grotwoski technique, Meisner technique, Viewpoints, Commedia dell'Arte, Kalaripayattu, Mohiniyattam, Butoh, Yoga, and Contact improv. She graduated from New York University Abu Dhabi with a BA (Hons) in Theatre in May 2015.
Valentina has interned with Theater Mitu (actress), Young Jean Lee's Theater Company (intern), Elevator Repair Service (intern), and Zoukak Theatre Company (actress.) She has taught theatre to ages 6 - 14 and has directed theatre for and with children with casts ranging from 5 to 70 actors. She has explored documentary and community theatre and has devised text from interviews in an effort to explore themes repressed within a community. She is interested in the ways in which performance can bring about change and reveal the underlying issues in society.
